PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decompose efficiently exhaust gas to be treated containing high concentration ammonia and make the same harmless by diving a catalyst reactor into two stages, reducing the ammonia content by applying the theoretical oxygen amount or less in a preceding stage reactor, and then blowing air of theoretical oxygen amount or more to the ammonica content introduced into the reactor in the following stage, lowering the temperature to a given temperature of lower and introducing the air into the following reactor. SOLUTION: First, gas containing ammonia is adjusted to the theoretical oxygen amount or less at the temperature of 100-500 deg.C by adding therein oxygen containing gas such as air. Then the adjusted gas is introduced into a reactor 1 to decompose the gas of the theoretical oxygen amount or less into ammonia and water. Oxygen is added so that the gas exhausted out of the reactor 1 at the temperature of 250-450 deg.C contains the theoretical oxygen amount or more, and then the gas is introduced into a reactor 2, and the residual ammonia is decomposed into nitrogen and water. Even high concentration gas having ammonia content of one 1vol.% or more contained in the gas to be treated can be decomposed efficiently and made into harmless by this method. |
