The unit comprises a cooling water pump (10) whose delivery rate is electrically controlled depending on the operation parameters of the internal combustion engine. The cooling water pump has a belt wheel (2) which is driven by the engine. The pump further comprises an actuator (7-9) which changes the geometrical dimensions of the pump components which convey the coolant. The actuator is formed as a controlled valve in a bypass conduit (6) between the inlet pipe (4) and the pump chamber (5a). The actuator is electrically operated and may have an electromagnet (9) or an electric motor.
