PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a quaternary alkylammonium salt useful as an electrolyte of the organic electrolyte liquid for an electrolytic capacitor or an electric cell in high purity without using anhydrous hydrogen fluoride by reacting a quaternary alkylammonium halide with LiBF4 , etc., in an alcohol. SOLUTION: A quaternary alkylammonium holide of the formula R1 R2 R3 R4 N<+> .X1 <-> 1 (R1 to R4 are each a 1-5C alkyl; X1 is Cl or Br) (e.g. tetraethylammonium chloride) is reacted with LiBF4 or LiPF6 in an alcohol to readily provide the objective quaternary alkylammonium salt of the formula R1 R2 R3 R4 N<+> .X2 <-> (X2 is BF4 <-> or PF6 <-> ) in the method for producing the quaternary alkylammonium salt.
