PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a medicine, a cosmetic, a food additive, a biological antioxidant and a stabilizer. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R<1> is a 1-12C hydrocarbon, a (substituted)cycloalkyl, a heterocyclic ring, etc.; R<2> is an 8-30C hydrocarbon, a (substituted)alkyl, etc.; R<3> is PO3 H2 or glycosidyl; R<3> , R<4> and R<5> are each H, an alkyl, an aryl, an aralkyl, etc.; R<6> is H, or CO-R<7> (R<7> is H, a 1-20C aliphatic or phenylvinyl)]. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a 5-halogenomethyl-chroman represented by formula II (X is Br or Cl) with an alkali(ne earth) metallic salt of ascorbic acid or an ascorbic acid derivative represented by formula III. The compound represented by formula I can be used to thereby stabilize an organic substance, especially a food, medicine, a cosmetic or a plastic to injurious actions of oxygen, heat and/or light.
