Disclosed is an automatic focus regulator within a camcorder. The regulater comprises an weight adder, a comparator, a counter, an area adder and a system controller. The weight adder sets weight corresponding to each level of digital brightness signal from the object image. The comparator compares the level of the digital brightness signal to a threshold value, and outputs the result signal. The counter counts the result signal from the comparator, and outputs the count signal. The area adder integrates output values from the weight adder corresponding to a special area of a field according to the result signals from the comparator and a camera driver. The system controller generates a focus evaluation value by operating integration value from the area adder and counting value from the counter, and controls the focus lens by the focus evaluation value. Thereby, the focus evaluation value is compensated for automatic focusing in a vibration state from an user.
