An attachment for mounting a backhoe type bucket on a front-end loader having lifting arms for tiltably holding a wide bucket and hydraulic tilting cylinders for tilting the wide bucket, and which allows the front-end loader to be used as a backhoe. The attachment comprises a frame suitable for attachment to the front-end loader mechanism in the absence of the wide bucket, the frame having end connector parts with a lower pair of pivots attachable to the lifting arms and with an upper pair of pivots attachable to the hydraulic tilting cylinders. The lower and upper pairs of pivots lie in a common plane, and a bucket arm carrying a backhoe bucket is connected to the frame by pivot means allowing movement of the bucket arm relative to the frame about a pivot axis which is so related to the common plane of the frame pivots that when the common plane is vertical this pivot axis extends fore-and-aft of the front-end loader and the backhoe bucket is close to its lowest position. A hydraulic cylinder directly connects the bucket arm to the frame for swinging the bucket arm sideways relative to the front-end loader about the pivot axis to allow material to be dumped from the backhoe bucket beside a trench or hole being dug without movement of the front-end loader.
