A method is provided of communicating electromagnetically between first and second touching or closely-spaced elongate structures (2, 4). The method comprises the step of: providing the first and second elongate structures (2, 4) with first and second pairs (6, 12) of periodic conductors, respectively, each pair (6, 12) of periodic conductors extending at least partially along the length of a respective elongate structure (2, 4), and the two periodic conductors of each pair (6, 12) being spatially arranged approximately 180 DEG out of phase with each other. The method also involves placing an electric data transmission signal on the first pair (6) of periodic conductors, so that electric currents flow in opposite directions in the two periodic conductors of the first pair (6) and generate a varying electromagnetic field around the first elongate structure (2, 4). Finally, the method includes the step of positioning the second of the elongate structures (2, 4) so that an electric signal, corresponding to the transmission signal, is received in the second pair (12) of periodic conductors as a result of electric currents induced in the second pair (12) of periodic conductors.
