A method of treating a coolant liquid used in rolling mills 2, 3, or for continuous casting and contaminated with particles of scale, comprises passing the contaminated liquid through a primary settling zone 11, retaining the liquid in the zone until all particles of scale having a particle size greater than about 200 ~m have settled out, passing the supernatant liquor through a region 13 of constant magnetic field under streamline flow conditions thereby to coagulate iron-containing particles in the liquor and enhance sedimentation of resulting coagulated particles, and collecting the treated liquor now containing less than about 50 ppm solids by weight for reuse. The settling zone may be a tank optionally preceded by a hydrocyclone. Electromagnets, or ferrite or rare earth magnets are placed adjacent a stainless steel or plastics tube of rectangular cross section to provide the constant magnetic field. A second settling tank 20 may be provided. |
