PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject high-purity compounds in high yield according to simple operations by hydrogenating the aromatic nucleus of specific t-butyl esters of aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a specified catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) The aromatic nucleus of t-butyl esters of an aromatic carboxylic acid represented by the formula, (X-)m Z<1> [-CO-O-C(CH3 )3 ]n (X is OH, a 5-6C cycloalkyl or the like; Z<1> is an aromatic ring-containing group such as formula II, III, etc.; (m) is 0-4; (n) is 1-4] (e.g. t-butyl 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylate) is hydrogenated in the presence of (B) a hydrogenation metallic catalyst which is preferably a noble metal-supporting catalyst in an amount of 0.1-50 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. component A in (C) a solvent in an amount of preferably 0-50 times based on the component A under conditions of normal temperature to 200 deg.C and atmospheric pressure to 100 kg/cm<2> for several tens of min to several tens of hr to afford the objective compounds represented by the formula, (X-)m Z<2> [-CO-O-C(CH3 )3 ]n (Z<2> is a hydro- aromatic ring-containing group such as formula III, IV). |
