This invention concerns a device comprising a first and a second temperature measurement points (8a, 10a) which are nearly located at the same location and form a temperature sensor (4). A first rinsing device (11) is used to rinse the first temperature measuring point (8a) with fuel (O2) which reacts exothermically with bulk material (6) containing carbon. Additionally, a device is provided which compares the measurement signal (m1) of the first temperature measurement point (8a) with the measurement signal (m2) of the second temperature measurement point (10a). The resulting temperature difference (T1-T2) indicates whether the bulk material (6) has reached the temperature sensor (4) or lies below it.
