2-Amino-1-(4-hydroxy-2-methylphenyl)propanol derivatives represented by general formula (I) and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, wherein one of Y and Z represents -A-CO-R [wherein A represents -O-D-E (wherein D represents alkylene; and E represents a single bond or phenylene) or ethylene; and R represents hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, amino, dialkylamino or alicyclic amino] while another represents hydrogen; and the carbon atoms marked with (R) and (S) respectively represent those of R- and S-configurations. These compounds have effects of selectively stimulating beta 2-adrenaline receptors with relieved burden on the heart, such as frequent pulse, and are useful as drugs, for example, preventives for threatened abortion or premature birth and bronchodilators.
