<p>A one-handed data entry terminal (10, 100) having a limited number of keys (19, 102) reachable by a single hand of the user from a home position without requiring repositioning of their hand when moving from one key to another (fig. 6). The keyboard includes a heel rest (42) for pivotally positioning the hand while operating the keyboard to permit the operator to maintain eye contact with the source of data being entered. The terminal is preferably bent in two places (Figs. 1, 3, 6), with a row of keys on each of the two upwardly angled surfaces (28, 36) and three rows of keys on the flat intermediate surface (30, 32, 34). The keys are arranged in four columns (20, 22, 24, 26), the first three (20, 22, 24) being spaced a predetermined distance apart and the fourth (26) being spaced a slightly greater distance from the rest. The middle row of keys (32) includes an outwardly projecting, bisecting ridge (40) detectable by the user. Keyboard operation requires two keystrokes for entry of each alphanumeric character.</p> |
