In a process for growing monocrystals, a highly pure polycrystalline material is molten and monocrystals are grown in the thus generated molten mass. The problem addressed by the invention is to design the process in such a way that no additional impurities are generated during the melting process. To solve this problem, at least part of the polycrystalline material is heated during a first stage to increase its conductivity. A hot conductor is used as polycrystalline material, and the heated fraction of polycrystalline material is converted with direct induction heating into a molten mass. The power and frequency of the induction heating are such that a marginal zone of non-molten material remains and self-contains the molten mass in the manner of a crucible.
