Vibration damping piston for vehicle engine mounting

The engine mounting has coaxial sleeves (2,3) separated by a ring shaped elastomer element inside which are a main fluid chamber (5) and a secondary fluid chamber (6) linked by a fluid duct (7). A solenoid valve (8) controls the fluid connection between the chambers and hence controls the damping characteristic of the mounting. A sensor (9) detects abnormal suspension movements e.g. hitting a pot hole, and activates the solenoid valve. The valve has a pair of plates linked by a central shaft and moved to either side by the solenoid. One of the plates has a ribbed surface to provide a controlled fluid path when pulled up against the solenoid coil.
