A hydraulic brake system has a master cylinder (1) that can be actuated by a brake pedal (3), a brake line (4) that connects the master cylinder (1) to brake cylinders (6, 7) and a pump (13) that can be driven by an electric motor (18) and whose feeding stream runs in a circuit through a valve control valve (19) to the suction side of the pump (13). The pressure control valve (19) controls the pump pressure depending on the pressure prevailing in the section (5) of the brake line (4) connected to the master cylinder (1). The active hydraulic surfaces of the pressure control valve (19) are designed in such a way that the ratio between pump pressure and master cylinder pressure is higher than 1.
