TERPHENYL DERIVATIVE, LIQUID-CRYSTAL COMPOSITION, AND LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

A liquid-crystal compound which exhibits high voltage retention and low threshold voltage, has very small dependency upon the temperature, has a large DELTA n value, and has excellent compatibility with other liquid-crystal materials at low temperatures; a liquid-crystal composition comprising the same; and a liquid-crystal display element made by using the same. The liquid-crystal compound is a terphenyl derivative represented by general formula (1), wherein R represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and the methylene groups (-CH2-) not adjacent to each other in the alkyl group may be substituted by an oxygen atom; X represents a halogen atom, -OCF3, -OCF2H, -CF3, -CF2H, or -CFH2; Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, and Y6 each independently represent H or F, provided that at least two of Y1, Y2, Y3, and Y4 represent fluorine and each atom constituting this compound may be substituted by an isotopic atom.
