Optical fibers are aligned by opposing first and second optical fibers having claddings and cores along a close optical axis in a first connector, passing light through the first fiber and into the second fiber so that the light entering the second fiber strikes a dual photodiode detector having a division along a first direction transverse to one of the first and second longitudinal axes so as to determine displacement of the first axis from the second axis in a second direction transverse to one of the axes and transverse to the first direction, minimizing the displacement of the axes relative to each other in the second direction, and repeating the process for another direction by rotating the division along the second direction, and minimizing the displacement of the axes relative to each other in the first direction. |
