The present invention relates to the use of an absorbent expanding material (46) in an absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin (20) in order to concentrate the absorbed liquid in the central region of the absorbent article. In particular the present invention relates to the use of an absorbent expanding material (46) which upon absorption expands more than the absorbed volume of liquid required in order to provide additional void volume. In addition, the present invention relates to absorbent articles such as baby diapers, adult incontinence products or sanitary articles in which the material of the absorbent core has a better liquid transport capability into the thickness of the article than within the plane of the article.
