Purificn. of an ether formed from an aliphatic monoalcohol (min. 2C) and an isoolefin (min. 4C) from a mixt. contg. the ether, monoalcohol and hydrocarbons of which the number of C atoms corresp. to that of the isoolefin, comprises: (a) introduction of the mixt. in to a prim. distn. zone, and recovery, at the head, of the majority of the hydrocarbons and the purified either from the base; (b) lateral withdrawal from the prim. distn. zone of at least one phase directed to a sec. distn. zone; then (c) recovery (from the base) of a purified monoalcohol and (from the head) a mixt. of monoalcohol, ether and hydrocarbons which is recycled to the prim. zone. Also claimed is a process for the synthesis of ethyl tert. butyl ether (ETBE) which includes the purificn. process outlined above.
