Poly(ethyleneimine) immobilised on crosslinked polystyrene support

A graft copolymer P-C(=O)-CHR-CH2-X-PEI (I) consisting of an acetylated polystyrene, crosslinked with divinylbenzene and poly(ethyleneimine) with a mol. wt. of 1000-800,000 Daltons. P = 0.5-40% divinyl benzene crosslinked polystyrene R = alkyl PEI = polyethyleneimine X = sec or tert amine group. Also claimed are: (i) a metal complex of (I) with a metal ion of Group 1, 2 and 8 through the bonding of the metal cation with the prim, sec. and tert amine groups of the poly(ethyleneimine) (ii) the preparation of (I) by mixing acetylated, cross-linked polystyrene with formaldehyde and poly(ethyleneimine) (iii) the preparation of metal complexes of (I) by mixing (I) with Group 1, 2 and 8 metal ions at a pH of less than 2.0.
