The device tests a source (1) of acoustic waves which can be applied to the body of a patient by means of an application surface (5a) bounding a volume of a fluid acoustic propagation medium. The test device has a pressure sensor which provides an electric output signal. It also has an arrangement (10) to detect the output signal of the pressure sensor and a holder (7) for the sensor. The holder (7) holds the sensor during operation of the test device to detect the air pressure, relative to the source (1) such that an air path is provided between the application surface (5a) and the pressure sensor. The device preferably has a wall of constant thickness curved in an essentially spherical curve around the pressure sensor. This is arranged relative to the sensor such that the middle point of the curve lies in the focus region of the acoustic waves.
