In a magnetic position sensor, at least two stator elements are arranged in a magnetic field, and a magnetic field probe is located in the air gap between the stator elements. Means for tracking the displacement of an object are arranged in a plane parallel to the plane spanned by the stator elements. In a position sensor independent of an axial play, the means connected to the moving object are designed in two parts. Each soft magnetic part (4a, 4b) has at least one segment and the soft magnetic elements are fixed to each other in an offset position with respect to each other, so that the segment of the first element (4a) faces a gap between segments of the second element (4b). The stator elements (2a, 2b) are arranged between the soft magnetic elements (4a, 4b) and a magnet (3) which generates a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane spanned by the stator elements (2a, 2b) is arranged both between the stator elements (2a, 2b) and between the soft magnetic elements (4a, 4b).
