A unit smashes the casings of equipment used in e.g. communications, consumer electronics, and small electronic units; for subsequent recovery of valuable fractions. The item is laid on a table (12) surrounded by a frame comprising side columns (16, 18) with interconnecting horizontal beams (20, 22). On one column (18) there is a first smasher (34) connected to a drive (26) with an operational- and control unit (38). On the upper beam (20) hangs a second smasher, at the same height as the first. This can be adjusted along the upper beam and fixed in position. A jack (50) raises or lowers the frame bodily, with respect to the table.
