Anti theft device for a vehicle

An anti-theft system of particular value to the operators of large fleets of hire vehicles employs global positioning co-ordinates to continuously register the geographical location of vehicles via the antenna (16) and evaluation unit (18). The permitted boundaries of vehicle operation are defined by stored data in the memory (31) and a monitor/control computer (26) is thus able to determine any occasion when a vehicle moves outside the defined region by comparing co-ordinate data. Under these circumstances an audible (86) and visual (88) alarm is triggered, the electronic engine controller (78) is de-activated and the situation reported to the vehicle centre by a modem link.
