The invention concerns a hydraulic motor vehicle braking system for braking each time the brake pedal is actuated and for automatic braking. To that end, there is provided a pump which comprises an intake connection connected to a pressure medium reservoir (14) and a delivery connection for drawing pressure medium out of the reservoir (14) and conveying it to a connection (21) of a master cylinder (12). A braking circuit of the vehicle braking system (10) with wheel brake cylinders of associated vehicle wheels and valve arrangements for modulating braking pressure is connected to the connection (21) of the master cylinder (12). Further provided is a valve device (34) between the pressure medium reservoir (14) and a pressure chamber (19) which is connected to the connection (21) of the master cylinder (12). The valve device is a pressure valve which can be actuated by the pump pressure during automatic braking and, when the pump pressure is low, throttles the flow through the pressure chamber (19) of the master cylinder (12) towards the reservoir (14) and, when the pump pressure relative thereto is high, restricts this pressure.
