A receiving body (19) in the top of the main sedimentation chamber collects effluent from the pre-sedimentation chamber (13) and empties it into a cyclone device. The emptying motion of the receiving body is used to activate the addition of chemicals to the cyclone. The mixture of chemicals and effluent flow down through a central opening in the cyclone and are removed via the exit pipe leading from the sedimentation chamber. An apparatus (10) for automatically treating effluent from e.g. houses or industrial premises comprises at least one feed pipe (15) for delivering untreated effluent to at least one collection place or chamber where pre-sedimentation is carried out to remove large solid particles. At least one pipe (18) leads from the pre-sedimentation chamber to at least one further chamber where the effluent is subjected to a chemical flocking step. Treated effluent leaves the main sedimentation chamber via an exit pipe. A receiving body in the top region of the main sedimentation chamber collects effluent from the pre-sedimentation chamber and then once it has been filled to a given level it swings about an axis to empty its contents into a cyclone device. The emptying motion of the receiving body is used to actuate means used to supply the cyclone with at least one liquid chemical (mixture) stored in a separate vessel.
