Production of 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-3-en-1-one ( beta -isophorone) (I) comprises liquid phase isomerisation of 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one ( alpha -isophorone) (II) in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst comprising an oxide or mixed oxide of a Group IIa, VIII, Ib, IIIa and Va element (or a salt of such an oxide which is insoluble under the reaction conditions) and in the absence of an organic base.
