An input pipe (2) is normally sealed from the output (8) by a plastic seal (6) set into an aluminium disc (6). The aluminium disc is normally held against the end of the input pipe by a spring (7). A coil of copper wire (4) is wound coaxially around the input pipe. When the valve is to be opened, an alternating or modulated current is fed to the coil (4). The current changes induce eddy currents in the aluminium disc, which acts as a short circuit. Faraday's law of induction causes the disc to move away from the coil, thus allowing the medium (1) to flow from input (2) to output (8). The valve is encased in a plastic housing (3).
