PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an olefin oligomer capable of simply carrying out treatment after using a catalyst used for reaction, free from corrosion against reaction apparatus, excellent in reactivity and low in isomerization rate of raw material olefin. SOLUTION: A smectite mineral (e.g. montmorillonite) which is an aluminum- containing clay mineral treated with a mineral acid (e.g. sulfuric acid) is used as a raw material and the smectite mineral is brought into contact with a salt of a metal of the group III or the group II, etc., in the periodic table at about 0-100 deg.C for 0.5-48hr to carry out ion exchange and subjected to halogenating treatment with a halogenating agent containing fluorine (e.g. ammonium fluoride) at about 1-100 deg.C in a liquid phase and baked at about 100-800 deg.C to provide the objective catalyst for production of olefin oligomer, capable of oligomerizing 4-20C, preferably 6-14C α-olefin. Oligomerization reaction is carried in the presence of the catalyst in an amount of 0.1-50g based on 100g olefin, preferably at 0-200 deg.C for 0.5-24hr. |
