A portable blood sugar monitor is new and uses a test strip to measure the blood sugar level. The strip is ribbon with a number of test sections, in a cassette for insertion into the monitor, wound round a delivery spool and taken up by a winding spool (c). When the cassette compartment (a) is closed, the monitor automatically measures the blood drop on the test ribbon strip. After each measurement, the test strip ribbon is advanced automatically by the cassette to give a new test zone. The production quality of the test strip ribbon is a code at the ribbon which can be scanned by the monitor, without any manual coding action. The puncture needle, to take a drop of blood, is integrated into the instrument. A heater brings the test ribbon strip to the optimum temp. at the sampling and measurement point. The cassette is protected by granules against condensation water. A warning indication is tripped just before the end of the test ribbon strip, in the cassette, to allow for a cassette change in good time. The monitor gives the blood sugar reading by a synthesized voice, or through an interface to a computer.
