The present invention refers to a process to prepare an indene, by reacting an indanone with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing one or several oxides, particularly, metallic oxides. The preferred oxides comprise elements from Groups Ia, IIa, IIIa, IVa, Va, Ib, IIb, IIIb, Vb, VIb, VIIb, VIII, of the Periodic Table, or elements from the Lanthanide Group.
