PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for configuring automatically parameters of a protocol layer in a terminal equipment and a carrier equipment. SOLUTION: An automatic configuration program 140 controls an operation of a terminal equipment to give a series of probes to a carrier equipment. Each probe is configured to check a specific parameter and to limit a potential set with respect to the parameter. The automatic configuration program 140 receives a reply returned from the carrier equipment. The automatic configuration program 140 configures other probe in response to the other values of the parameter based on a set of the probe, any preceding probe, the reply, any preceding reply and the parameter. The other values are decided by limiting the potential set used to configure the parameter. The automatic configuration program 140 checks a plurality of parameters applicable to the parameter and repeats it till the parameter value is established.
