PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material for an anode for a non-aqueous solvent secondary battery with high capacity and little capacity loss by carrying out treatment for pitch or the like, obtained by polymerizing condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon or substances containing such the hydrocarbon in the presence of a specified material, to make pitch infusible and firing the resultant pitch. SOLUTION: Reformed pitch with 100% optical isotropy is obtained by reforming precursor pitch or tar obtained by polymerizing condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon or substance containing such the hydrocarbon in the presence of hydrogen fluoride, boron trifluoride. The reformed pitch is treated to become infusible and then, the resultant pitch is fired under a non-oxidative gas or vacuum to give a carbon material for an anode for non-aqueous solvent secondary batteries.
