Individual motifs (2), representing the component letters, numbers of other symbols of an intelligible message, are sequentially suspended from a cable (4), connected to an electric supply, by short leads (8) through which their internal illuminating source - discharge tube, miniature lamp array, etc. - is activated. Each lead ends in a bayonet cap plugged into a supply cable socket (10), allowing the message to be altered by suitable rearrangements. To prevent random rotations about the vertical axes, reducing or destroying intelligibility, each motif carries at its summit a ring fixed in the plane of the symbol, with a vertical cross-bar, bowed outwards. An auxiliary wire (3), tensioned between suitable supports (5) at either end, is passed between the ring and cross-bar on each motif, so that all motifs are constrained to remain in the same plane. An alternative restraint design is described.
