The presence of the added metal attenuates the hydrogenolysis activity of the group VIII metal and improves the selectivity of the hydro-reforming process .The water soluble organometallic form of the added element facilitates the preparation of the catalyst. Catalytic hydro-reforming and production of aromatics is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising a support, a group VIII metal and a metal M chosen from germanium (Ge), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), rhenium (Re), niobium (Nb), gallium (Ga), indium (In) and thallium (Tl). The metal M is in the form of an organometallic compound in aqueous solution at a pH less than 10, and comprises at least one carbon-M bond. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the catalyst.
