The invention describes an aqueous coating composition for paper or cardboards, comprising a smectite clay mixture with starch in an aqueous solution, wherein starch comprises from about 75 to about 95 percent by weight and expansible clay comprises from approximately 5 to approximately 25 percentby weight of aqueous coating composition solids content. A process for an aqueous coating composition for paper having smectite is also described.
