<p>A portable hardness testing instrument is esp. for the in situ testing of steel parts of refinery installations. It has a supporting body carrying a withdrawable test point at the end of an impact mechanism, having a known hardeness exceeding that of the samples to be tested, mounted at the tip of a conical point of known length, with a peripheral face acting as a stop. The test point is driven against the specimen until held by the stop, when the deformation of the conical point serves as a measure for the hardness of the specimen.</p> |
