PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the image quality of a photographed image superior according to a photographed scene and a light-beam state, such as the lighting quantity of flash photography, wherein a subject it lit. SOLUTION: A control part 211 which performs centralized control over the photographing operation of the camera has decision parts which decide the photography scene of the subject, such as a luminance decision part 2111a and a scene decision part 211c. Further, the control part 211 decides whether or not dimming control is proper from the output timing of the lighting stop signal of a dimming circuit 304. According to the decision results of the light- beam state wherein the subject is lit such as the decided photographic scene, whether the flash light quantity is proper, etc., characteristics of image processing such asγcharacteristics and filter characteristics are set. An image signal, inputted by a CCD 303 has its contrast processed and the outline emphasized by aγ-correcting circuit 208 and a filter part 211f according to specificγ-characteristics and filter characteristics. With the characteristics of the specific image processing, corresponding to the light beam state of the subject, the image signal is processed to optimize image quality.
