PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart a satisfactory orienting characteristics and a high voltage retentivity to an oriented film and to obtain a liq. crystal display device not causing a seizing and bleeding by using a polyimide consisting of specified amts. of pyromellitic dianhydride and cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride. SOLUTION: This compsn. for a liq. crystal orienting film is a polyimide-base compsn. A diamino compd. forming the polyimide is 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and the polyimide consists preferably of 35-65mol% pyromellitic dianhydride and 65-35mol% cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride. When a liq. crystal orienting film formed using this compsn. is used in a liq. crystal display device, the objective device having high voltage retentivity and less liable to cause seizing and bleeding is obtd.
