PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare earth oxide phosphor which is further improved with respect to luminance-current characteristics (γ-characteristics), temperature characteristics and life characteristics. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing a rare earth oxide phosphor represented by the formula; Ln2 O3 : R comprises blending a rare earth oxide material with a flux and calcining the resulting mixed material. In this method, the rare earth oxide material satisfies the following requirements: Dl/Ds<=1.5, 2.0<=Da<=6.0, 2.0<=Dm<=12.0, 1.0<=Dm/Da<=2.0, and 0<=σlog<=0.30; which means that the material mainly contains particles of a roughly spherical shape and has a narrow particle diameter distribution. In the above formulae, Ln is at least one element selected from among Gd, Y, La and Lw; R is at least one element selected from among Eu, Tb, Pr, Dy, Tm, Ce, Yb; Dl represents a long diameter of a particle (μm); Ds represents a short diameter of a particle (μm); Da represents an average diameter (μm); Dm represents a central value (μm) of diameters andσlog is a value indicating a particle diameter distribution. Further, this method comprises calcining such a mixed material at a temperature in the range of 800 to 1700 deg.C.
