Cover layer for hygiene article, e.g. sanitary towel, incontinence pad or nappy

A liquid permeable cover layer (1) for hygiene articles has a series of interspaced elongated strips of material (2) distributed over at least its central surface area. The strips are folded into wave shapes to form hills (3) and valleys (4) on both sides. The hills form the contact surface of the article with the person wearing it. Also claimed is the preparation of this layer, comprising: (i) folding a first layer of material to form a series of parallel pleats with hills and valleys; (ii) folding a second layer of liquid permeable material to form similar pleats extending in the opposite z-direction; (iii) placing the second layer on top of the first layer with the two sets of pleats at right angles to each other and the valleys in the first layer attached to the top side of the second layer; (iv) cutting the first layer along lines running parallel to and in between the top edges of the pleats in the second layer; and (v) eliminating pleats in the second layer.
