PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent peeling and falling of matting agents in a process for producing a photothermographic image forming material, to provide a photothermographic image forming material which prevents the occurrence of image defects after heat development, diminishes haze due to unevenness in interference and irregular reflection in laser and ensures good image quality, and to provide an image recording method using the material. SOLUTION: In the photothermographic image forming material, having a photosensitive layer containing photosensitive silver halide grains, an organic silver salt, a reducing agent and a binder on the base and also having at least one layer containing a binder and a matting agent on the base, at least one matting agent-containing layer contains a crosslinker for the binder and fine particles having groups reactive with the crosslinker on the surfaces of fine particles comprising an organic compound and/or an inorganic compound as the matting agent.
