The warning system has a detector to sense that a side door of a vehicle is about to be opened and that the driver or a passenger is about to emerge from the vehicle. The detector activates a signal which is situated on the outside of the vehicle where it is visible to passing pedestrians or vehicles. The signal is provided by flashing lights fitted on the side of the vehicle or attached to the external rear view mirrors of the vehicle. An audible signal may be used as well. The detector senses the stopping of the vehicle, release of the seat belts, operation of the hand brake or movements of the door handles of the vehicle.
