The foldable back (1) of a vehicle seat is locked onto the fixed seat part by a locking part (2) on the back which penetrates in a window (12) in the seat. A bolt (3) connected to the seat engages in the locked position with the locking part. An unlocking push button (4) slides in a guide shaft (41) between two unlocking positions. In the first position the push button head (52) passes outside the shaft beyond its upper edge and in the other its lower end (53) pushes the bolt into the unlocked position allowing disengagement of the lock. The push button has a return spring (50) which pushes the push button to its first unlocking position. There is also a control rod (60) for moving it into an intermediate position in which its upper end is flush with the shaft edge. This control is arranged so as to be activated by the locking part only when this is in the locking position.
