Ribs (46) extending axially on each spacer bolt (38) are fitted to the assembly shoulder (42) of the bolt endface (40) and headed or upset once seated in place to define the necessary clearance. A bearing (36) forming part of each bolt is on an extended bolt lateral part to form part of the spring bearing area. The clutch assembly as a whole includes a cover plate (23), spring (22) and bolts (38) fixed to the cover to support the spring with desired clearance. The ribs taper towards their free end and are specifically trapezoidal in profile. The axial clearance afforded by the head ribs of the bolt is needed to guard against spring tipping or possible breaking when it contacts the bearing recesses each time the clutch is released from its normally engaged condition.
