Production of heme and recombinant hemoproteins

The present invention relates to methods of enhancing the production of heme-containing proteins by increasing the accumulation of heme in heterologous host cells. The methods are accomplished by exposing the host cells to increased amounts of endogenous or exogenous delta -aminolevulinic acid (ALA) resulting in an increase in heme production. Enhancing the endogenous production of ALA can be accomplished by adding multiple copies of the hemA gene into the host cell. Methods of producing enhanced amounts of heme are also provided.
