A method and apparatus (10, 14, 18) for the analysis to determine the partial pressures of gases and other volatile substances dissolved in blood or other liquid samples in a manner independent of the solubility of the gases in the blood or other liquids. A countercurrent membrane exchanger (CCME) (10) is provided for equilibrating a carrier fluid with a liquid sample, the output of which is coupled to a tubular direct insertion membrane probe (t-DIMP) (14) membrane inlet mass spectrometer (18). The CCME is designed to induce secondary flows to reduce the resistance to equilibration between the liquid sample and carrier. Use of heat shrink sleeves (24) to connect the silicone membrane (16) and radiation shields (26) to prevent heating of the membrane (16) by the mass spectrometer ion source (18, 20), reduces noise, allows reduced liquid flow rates, and improves the linearity of the analysis.
|
