The proximity switch has two transmission coils (1,2) arranged one after the other in the direction of influence, at least one receiver coil and an evaluation circuit connected to the receiver coil. Current is passed through the two transmission coils in opposite directions. Two receiver coils (3,4) can be used. These are preferably arranged symmetrically, at a defined distance apart and at predefined distances from the transmitter coils. The receiver coils are mounted centrally between the transmitter coils.
