The pallets (4) are lifted and lowered by endless drive mechanisms (1,2) incorporating lateral supports (3) for them, and in the vertical direction. The unit sections (8,9) are situated alongside or one behind the other in a paternoster pattern. Movement of the pallets between the sections or to the outside in the horizontal direction is by thruster mechanisms, some of which swing outwards and inwards and some (7) of which are in fixed positions. The unit can be combined with further mechanical car parks, or mounted in a row with other units. The pallets can be accommodated loose on the supports while prevented from moving on them.
