Coding device providing workpiece information

The coding device provides specific information for a workpiece supported by a workpiece carrier (12) displaced along at least one carrier rail (11). It uses a data carrier attached to the workpiece carrier, cooperating with a stationary read/write device. The read/write device is incorporated in a slot provided in the carrier rail. The data carrier is incorporated in the part of the workpiece carrier facing towards the carrier rail, for alignment with the read/write device during transport of the workpiece carrier along the carrier rail.
